Protest against the cancelation of elections in the North of Ireland

On Thursday, May 29, there should have been elections for the Assembly in the North of Ireland. These elections are demanded by the Good Friday Agreement, which was signed five years ago. This agreement has been the basis of the peace process. The British Government cancelled the elections. With this action the British Government stalled the peace process once again. The elections were cancelled against the advice of the Irish Government. This is a clear violation of one of the bottom lines of democracy. The people in Ireland have been deprived of one of the most fundamental rights.

Our group, the «Save the Good Friday Agreement Coalition»* protests against this act of arbitrariness. The peace process must not be attacked by a Unionist veto or a unilateral step of the British Government. We demand elections for the Assembly at a fixed date in the near future. We ask you as a representative of Great Britain to inform your government about our protest and to demand immediate action.

* the group «Save the Good Friday Agreement Coalition» (http://www.info-nordirland.de/ ) supports the process of conflict resolution in the North of Ireland. Our aim is to help the implementation of the "Good Friday Agreement" (GFA) through creating pressure on responsible politicians and through media work. The agreement has the ability to democratically change the North of Ireland. Our group is not bound to a certain political group nor to a certain profession or nationality.
